Imogen Butler

Imogen Butler is a recent graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London where she studied a BA in Swahili and Development Studies.

She has shown a passion for fashion from an early age but grew to be concerned with the bad practices common in the industry. Imogen went on to study Development Studies in order to learn more about the economic situation of the countries in which our clothes are often produced. Writing her dissertation about the impact of CSR, Fair Trade and Social Businesses on labour standards for workers in the garment industry, she has conducted extensive research and gained an in-depth understanding of the relationship between the garment industry and international development.

Imogen became interested in African fashions and textiles on her Swahili language year abroad on the East African coast. Whilst there she also worked at SOKO – Kenya, where she experienced first hand the benefits and challenges of producing in Africa for an international market.

Imogen will bring her field work experience of fair trade production workshops and her knowledge within CSR, Economics and International Development to the AfricaFashionGuide team.
