MADE-BY’s 2011 Annual EVENT – Fashion with respect for People and Planet

Posted on September 25, 2011

MADE-BY is a European not-for-profit organisation launched in 2004 committed to sustainability. It was founded as a response to growing consumer concern within Europe in relation to the fashion industry and its responsibility over social and environmental issues. Founded by leading Dutch International NGO Solidaridad it has a mission to further improve these environmental and social conditions within the fashion industry in the long term by engaging with fashion brands and retailers.

They are able to offer on-the-ground supply chain improvement programmes through their founding partner Solidaridad, who have offices in key manufacturing countries and are also involved in the development of sustainable cotton farming initiatives. Funding from the European Union received by their London office helps them to develop relevant services to brands and suppliers in the market place of fashion and textiles globally and thus help to improve sustainability within the fashion industry,

Their services include working with brands to develop, implement and maintain sustainability strategies with a commercial focus; a range of consultancy projects with fashion brands that are tailor-made to their specific sustainability needs; presenting sustainable materials workshops and social compliance training. They also help brands to communicate their sustainability progress through their various tools which include their annually published Scorecard. They also run regular Seminars aimed at textile and apparel professionals who are interested in becoming more informed on new developments in the field of sustainable fashion. Presently the only brand who sources/develops in Africa is Banuq whom at the time aimed to set up a fully African supply chain. They used organic and fairly traded cotton grown and processed within Egypt, with the garments manufactured in Ethiopia. From this socially responsible project they contributed to the aim of job creation in Africa. We encourage other African design companies to contact made-By and to consider using their services to do likewise.
