We bumped into the lovely Ese Akpojotor at the Africa Fashion Week London event this August and got to see some of her lovely products and hear more about her company.

Sweetdesignstudio was born in 2009 due to the lack of contemporary illustrations representing the woman of colour. As a graphic design graduate, Ese was always drawn to design and especially to illustration. She has a great passion for fashion and wanted to convey images that looked at woman of today. She began then to create Sweet Design Studio greeting cards because as she says:

“It is what I see everyday, in the streets, the shops everywhere. It is what girls are wearing now.”

Sweet Design Studio images are all are handmade using a variety of mixed media such as sequences, paper collages cotton strings and mixed media. The images are then processed on to the computer for completion. Sweet Design Studio cards are available in three fabulous ranges: Blank, Happy Birthday, and Thank You. On asking Ese why she started this she says that:

“As an African woman, I feel the fashion industry does neglect us. I feel with Sweetdesignstudio, it is helping to fill in the gap, you can portray fashion with woman of colour in a fun, girly and stylish way. Sweetdesignstudio greeting cards are eye-catching, contemporary, feminine and cute.”
